Cisco Inexpensive VOIP solution for newbs?
I'm getting a Cisco 1701 which I know supports VOIP and considering a 2621XM to learn. I know both can do PBX (am I right?). I'd like to use a VOIP phone (or two) and use a land line. Also, I plan to set up a point to point connection to peer wanting to do similar. If I wanted to set up voice over land line what do I need to do, and cheaper method is best. I've heard of DID and FXS. DID is more expensive, the cards I've found. What interface cards would I need to accomplish inbound and outbound calling for as cheap (within a 100 range) as possible but functional.
Also, say I didn't use a land line though defeat a big purpose, can I still set up two Cisco IP phones linked? Do I need Call Manager Express, is there a cheaper solution like computer based software?
I'm confused on logistics and how I could go about this. If anyone could provide info, it would be great!
You can configure the 2600XM Cisco router for CallManager Express, which can act as your PBX phone system. The feature set and capabilities are limited, just keep that in mind. But, next you need a Voice Network Module with FXO WIC cards. Those are not cheap, but you may be lucky on ebay. Your phone line from your PSTN provider would connect into the FXO port. If you get a VoIP phone, specifically a Cisco IP Phone that would connect to your router across the LAN and you can place/receive calls out your analog line. There is quite a bit of configuration needed, but there are many resources out there. I have a VoIP solution very similiar setup for my business, but we are using a Cisco 2800 and the new module called the Cisco Unified Communications 520 series designed for small businesses.
